Some common questions about the joining the crew team...

Do I need experience?

No prior rowing experience is necessary. In fact, most rowers that have even gone on to the Olympics have never touched an oar before college. However, people with an athletic background tend to pick of the sport a little quicker than those without previous experience in sports or on teams. We will teach you everything you need to know.

When is Practice/What is the time commitment?
Although rowing is a club sport, the ASU Crew team competes at the Division 1 level against other club teams and NCAA teams. Therefore, training is a crucial part of success and attending practice is mandatory. Students train approximately 2 hours everyday Monday-Friday and can attend up to 5 competitive regattas locally and nationally per semester on the weekends.

Novice (first year) trains from 5-7PM Monday- Friday
Varsity Women train from 5-7AM Monday-Friday
Varsity Men train from 6-8AM Monday-Friday

If you are thinking of crew this year you must schedule your classes around practice times!! Pre-Register now!

How much does rowing cost?
Currently it costs $500 a semester to row for ASU. This payment is broken down into two $250 installments during the semester to make it more bearable for students. This fee is crucial to maintain equipment, provide training, and keep the team operable.

Are there scholarships available?
Currently there are no scholarships available.

Where is Practice?
We meet for practice at the Marina on Tempe Town Lake. The Marina is located on the north side of the lake off of College and Curry. (Between Mill and Rural) The location is within 2 miles of ASU campus and most students jog, bike or carpool.

Where and Who does ASU Crew Race?
ASU races other collegiate teams throughout the nation that can be either NCAA teams that are supported through their university, or other club teams. (All Men’s crews are club).

The majority of our races are in California (Newport, San Diego, San Francisco, etc), in Tempe, and one or two may be on the East Coast.

Is ASU Crew club or NCAA?
Currently ASU Rowing is a club program originally formed by students and for students. Unlike NCAA programs, students have the opportunity to participate in a governing board, participate in Sport Club Council and are responsible for a majority of the fundraising.

ASU will eventually have a Women’s NCAA program in order to meet Title 9 requirements but have not set a date at this time.

What can I do now to train?
The best thing you can do is work on general fitness. Cardio is incredibly important and to prepare you should be doing some form of long endurance cardio – jogging, biking, swimming etc. In addition, if you have access to weights begin doing basic exercises to build over-all strength, even out the body, and focus on your core muscles. If you do not have rowing experience, do not train on rowing ergometers. (Concept 2s).

What are some of the benefits to rowing?

  • Comradery- this is a major team sport, you will make life-long friends
  • Full body workout that uses all the major muscle groups
  • Daily workouts with nationally recognized coaches
  • Compete on behalf of ASU as a collegiate athlete
  • Travel to out-of state regattas
  • Gain time management and leadership skills
  • Participate in social events- awards banquet, pasta dinners, parents weekend etc.
  • Rowing is fun and challenging
